Social Networking at Joomla.org

Posted by Jen Kramer in web content , web business , social networking , JoomlaBook , joomla sites , joomla 1.6 , joomla 1.5

Last night, the Joomla leadership announced that they were looking for request for comment on a social networking community to reside at Joomla.org.

We know it will either be called social.joomla.org or people.joomla.org. We know that it's been decided that JomSocial will run the community.

We are asked for input about whether this is something we'd use, what we want included, and how we think we'd use it.

Your Online Reputation

Posted by Samantha Bovat in joomla sites , information architecture , development , customer service

As they say, reputation is everything. And while there's an opportunity to make a great impression with a beautiful website, there are plenty of things you can do that will turn off your visitors.

Sites should be quick to load, easy to use, get your visitor in to the information they require and get them out. It's that simple. Sites like this let visitors know that the organization respects their time. The organization wants to help the visitor get great customer service — even if they've spoken to no one directly.

But long intro movies, badly designed forms, poor layout, and confusing navigation will leave your visitors lost and confused.

Launched! WineMaker Magazine!

Posted by Jen Kramer in joomla sites , joomla 1.5 , information architecture , frontend interface design , development , configuration , 4web news

We are thrilled to announce that we've launched a HUGE site we've been working on for the last few months, WineMaker Magazine.

WineMaker Magazine started in 1998, and it's about how to make wine at home, whether you start with fresh grapes, or whether you start with a kit.  The main goal for the website is to push subscriptions and sell back issues of the magazine.  The content surrounding that supports those goals.

Because the site supports a magazine, it should contain an issue-by-issue listing of all articles.  Some of these articles may be available online, while some articles might be listed, but purchasing a back issue is required to read it.

Joomla! Magazine article coming soon

Posted by Jen Kramer in templates , joomla sites , joomla extensions , joomla 1.5 , information architecture , frontend interface design

We've been asked by the Joomla! Magazine people to write an article about our MassAcorn website. It features all layouts done with a single template, among other cool features. We also used some great free extensions which we'll also discuss.  We're pretty excited!  It will be out in the August issue.

Joomla Performance

The Performance Grader at JoomlaPerformance.com is a great tool for measuring how fast your Joomla site loads. It also features suggestions you can implement for increasing speed, such as reducing the number of stylesheets, scripts, validation, etc.
