The Phrase Long-Term Solution seems like it should be a bit backwards for the world of technology. With technology changing so quickly, how can anyone really look to the future?
Well, I would say that if your web developer is not asking you the right questions and helping you look down the road, then you are getting short-sighted service. Of course what is implemented today will be changing down the road, but the overall purpose of that technology should still be the same.
Here are a few questions your developer should be asking of you:
- What problem are you trying to solve?
- Why do you think you need that particular widget, functionality, video?
- How will this help you to achieve your goals?
As you may already know from our 4Web, Inc. site- we will tell you that "just because you can doesn't mean you should." We firmly believe that businesses are often times sold a bill of goods that they don't really need and quite often detract from their marketing message and goals.
In order to achieve your long term goals-you need to start from the ground up. If it takes a little extra time and money to do it the right way- so be it!
When you are working with your web developer- be weary if they are not asking you a lot of questions. Be weary if everything you say you want on the site- they say they can do. Be weary if they are constantly patching on quick solutions to technology/website problems instead of analyzing the real issue.
Your job as a consumer is to also be prepared to go to a meeting armed with ideas and having looked through their sites for examples of their work. In addition, you should be prepared to ask them a lot of questions to find out where they are coming from and what kinds of experiences they have had implementing some of the solutions they suggest.
Developing a professional web presence takes time and experience and should always be done with the big picture in mind. If you are pressed for time, consider a step by step plan to achieve each goal one at a time. As long as they all add up to the long term goal- you will do just fine.
